FAQs

Decoy ducks were traditionally carved from wood and hand-painted to lure wildfowl during shooting expeditions in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Over time, working decoys transitioned from functional shooting accessories into highly collectible folk art objects.

Authentic period decoys were typically fashioned from solid blocks of native timber such as pine, balsa, or cedar, often constructed in two halves and hollowed out to reduce weight. They were finished with multiple layers of oil-based paint to withstand exposure to water.

Authentication relies on examining the tool marks, the craquelure and weathering of the original paint layer, and any maker stamps or lead weight configurations on the base. Genuine working pieces typically display authentic wear consistent with outdoor use rather than artificial distressing.

These sculptural objects bring texture and historical character to contemporary living spaces when displayed on bookshelves, mantelpieces, or sideboards. They pair well with natural materials like stacked books, linen, and aged timber to create a grounded, curated aesthetic.

To preserve the original surface and patina, keep wooden decoys out of direct sunlight and away from fluctuating heat sources that could cause the timber to split or the paint to flake. Dust gently with a dry, soft cloth and avoid applying modern polishes or cleaning agents.
