Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian scientific instrument comprises a cased extending brass telescope made in the United Kingdom around 1900. The device features multiple brass draw tubes terminating in an optical glass lens at the wider end, paired with a textured black sleeve along the main barrel and a removable circular brass cap. Alongside the optical apparatus sit two cylindrical storage containers rendered in black and brown cardboard with visible signs of edge wear and surface creasing. The scope measures 74 cm in width by 5 cm in height and depth, while the larger storage case stands 26 cm high by 6 cm wide and deep. In a contemporary home, this maritime piece fits naturally upon an office desk or library table as a decorative accessory with historical character.

FAQs

Handheld brass telescopes became widespread during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, primarily used by naval officers, sea captains, and astronomers. These instruments featured concentric draw tubes that slid into one another for portability and extended outward to adjust focal length.

Traditional telescopes were constructed using drawn brass tubing, ground optical glass lenses, and outer sleeves bound in leather, vellum, or textured paper to provide grip and protection against environmental moisture.

Authentic pieces feature precision-turned brass threads, natural wear on optical coatings, and hand-engraved maker signatures near the eyepiece. The presence of original protective cases made of leather or wrapped cardboard further indicates period construction.

An antique telescope can be styled horizontally across a stack of leather-bound books on a shelf, presented on a dark timber writing desk, or placed on a sideboard alongside brass navigational dividers and globes.

Preserve the brass by dusting with a soft microfiber cloth and avoiding harsh chemical polishes that strip historical patina. Clean lenses gently using specialised optical glass fluid and lens paper, storing the item in a climate-controlled space away from moisture.
