A Victorian rosewood writing table dating from 1850. The piece is constructed from dark brown timber with a cross-banded top, an inset leather writing surface, and a decorative pierced brass gallery rail fitted around three edges. A single frieze drawer with a dummy on the reverse incorporates original turned wooden knobs. Twin upright supports feature ring turning and carved acanthus leaf details, terminating in scroll feet with cabriole shaping and concealed castors. Practical proportions measuring 76 cm high, 92 cm wide, and 51 cm deep make this item suited for placement in a traditional study, a home library, or a quiet corner of a living room as a compact writing desk or side table.

Victorian rosewood writing tables are mid-to-late 19th-century domestic furniture items characterised by rich timber graining, compact proportions, and ornamental brass or carved detailing designed for correspondence.

These tables were constructed primarily from hardwoods such as rosewood or mahogany, often incorporating brass gallery rails, leather writing inserts, and hand-cut dovetail jointing.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-turned pedestal supports, original surface patina, historic brass fittings, and secondary drawer woods like pine or oak with hand-planed finishes.

Position the table against a wall or within a window alcove to serve as a compact desk, paired with a contemporary table lamp and clean-lined seating to balance the traditional woodwork.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth, apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year, and keep the table away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber shrinkage.
