This bureau plat is a French Louis XV style desk produced in Paris around 1940. The piece is constructed from patterned rosewood and kingwood veneer in warm brown tones, complemented by a leather inset top, gilt bronze ormolu mounts, parquetry veneer, and intricate handles. It stands upon curved cabriole legs with decorative metal mounts and shaped feet, and features multiple drawers fitted with ornate hardware along the frieze. Measuring 76 cm high, 102 cm wide and 58 cm deep, this compact writing desk provides a functional surface for correspondence or administrative work. In a contemporary interior, the desk functions effectively as a standalone writing table in a home study, library, or drawing room. The traditional French chateau aesthetic allows the piece to complement period interior schemes while serving practical daily requirements. The combination of warm timber grains and metallic detailing coordinates readily with diverse seating arrangements and study accessories.

FAQs

Keep the wood hydrated using natural beeswaxes while avoiding modern aerosol polishes, keep out of direct sunlight to prevent veneer bleaching, and dust ormolu mounts gently with a soft dry brush.

A historical bureau plat can be positioned as a freestanding centrepiece in a room, paired with minimalist contemporary seating and balanced with modern lighting to highlight its silhouette.

Authentic Louis XV pieces feature asymmetrical hand-carved rocaille motifs, hand-cast bronze mounts with original fire-gilding marks, pegged joinery, and natural hand-cut parquetry or marquetry veneers.

These desks typically feature oak frame construction clad in exotic wood veneers such as kingwood, rosewood, or tulipwood, accented by chased gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts and an inset leather writing top.

A bureau plat is a form of French writing desk that emerged during the late 17th century, defined by a flat leather-lined writing surface and a shallow frieze containing drawers.
