This Regency rosewood Davenport desk dates from around 1825 and is constructed from rich brown timber with a grained veneered panelled base. The writing top incorporates a green leather inset surrounded by a wooden border, and lifts to reveal a functional interior supported by a brass strut. Above sits a mirrored superstructure finished with a brass gallery rail along the top edge. The lower body contains four working drawers on one side with original bun handles, matched by faux drawer fronts on the opposite flank. Surface marks, scratches, and minor chips to the veneer at the base appear throughout, alongside functional locks operated by original keys. The construction measures 103 cm high, 50 cm wide, and 50 cm deep. Positioned as a compact writing station, the Davenport functions effectively in a home study, library, or drawing room as a practical surface for correspondence and document storage. Hidden castors positioned behind the lower skirt allow the unit to be repositioned within an interior space when required.

FAQs

A Davenport desk is a compact writing desk characterised by a sloping top hinged above a cabinet or bank of side drawers, originally named after a Captain Davenport who commissioned the design in the late 18th century.

Regency Davenport desks were typically constructed from fine hardwoods such as rosewood, mahogany, or walnut, featuring brass gallery rails, hand-cut dovetail joints, and tool-embossed leather writing surfaces.

Authentic Regency pieces feature hand-carved drawer runners, period-correct brass castors or escutcheon plates, natural wood oxidisation patterns, and mechanisms such as sliding desk tops or secret side drawers.

Its compact footprint makes it ideal for styling in quiet study alcoves, bedrooms, or hallways as a statement writing station paired with contemporary task lighting and minimalist accessories.

Keep the desk away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent veneer shrinkage, clean gently with a soft microfibre cloth, and apply a high-quality beeswax polish along the wood grain twice yearly.
