Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Edwardian Sheraton Revival bonheur du jour is constructed from warm brown rosewood with extensive marquetry and line inlay. The upper section contains four small drawers and a polished brass gallery rail, sitting above a rectangular writing surface lined with a faded green tooled hide skiver. Below, the base incorporates a curved central drawer fitted with a working key and tassel, flanked by two larger drawers with decorative brass drop handles. The front is further detailed with inlaid urn motifs, and the square tapered legs terminate in brass castors with black porcelain wheels. Measuring 94 cm high, 91 cm wide and 52 cm deep, the piece is finished on all sides so it can stand independently in the centre of a room. It provides a compact writing desk and compartment storage suitable for a study, living room or bedroom in an English country house interior.

FAQs

A bonheur du jour is a specialised type of ladies writing desk introduced in Paris during the eighteenth century. It typically features a flat table top with an integrated upper cabinet, small drawers, or compartments situated against the back edge.

These desks are commonly constructed from dense hardwoods such as rosewood, mahogany, or satinwood, often decorated with floral marquetry or parquetry inlays. The writing surface frequently incorporates a inset leather skiver, complemented by gilt-brass fittings and gallery rails.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints inside the small drawers, natural wear on brass castors, and precise wood-inlay craftsmanship using contrasting timbers such as boxwood or satinwood. Original brass galleries and period keyhole escutcheons are additional key indicators of period construction.

A bonheur du jour functions effectively as a compact work desk, a hallway console table, or a bedroom dressing table. Combining the detailed wood inlay with neutral walls, minimalist lighting, or contemporary artwork creates an engaging contrast between historical craftsmanship and modern design.

Dust surfaces regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical sprays that may degrade natural finishes. Protect the rosewood veneer from direct sunlight and extreme humidity changes, and use a high-quality beeswax paste periodically to nourish the timber.
