Introduction

Antique Victorian Bureau

A bureau is a case piece whose sloping or falling front drops to make a writing surface over drawers or a cupboard. The type grew up in Europe from the later 17th century for household letters and papers, and the 19th century made versions of it in every timber and at every price.

Under this heading the small ladies' writing desk leads. 'Bonheur' appears in 55 titles and 'jour' in 60, with 'bureau de dame' behind them, and 'desk' is the commonest word in the whole category. The bonheur du jour began in France in the later 18th century as a small writing table with a raised superstructure of little drawers and pigeonholes, and the Victorians revived it hard. Walnut runs through 74 titles, burr walnut 39, and 'inlaid' 69.

The other branches are real but smaller. Fall-front and cylinder bureaux form a large minority, usually in mahogany, which carries 63 titles. Secretaire chests, abattants and Wellington chests make up about one in seven, and bureau bookcases and bureau cabinets about one in eight. Carved oak and pine bureaux sit apart from all of these, a modest slice with an Arts and Crafts flavour; 'Green Man' carved oak examples turn up four separate times.

Dating is mixed. The dated field runs 1850 to 1930, and 140 of 263 listings carry a clean year, clustering in the 1860s and 1880s. The rest are given only as 'Victorian' or '19th Century'. Title and date sometimes disagree, with Georgian, Regency and Edwardian appearing on pieces filed as 19th century, so the two are worth reading together. Around 35 come to market in a year on Sellingantiques, spread across 87 different dealers.

What sets them apart

The Range

Timber sets the floor and the ceiling. Burr and figured walnut, kingwood, satinwood and the occasional amboyna sit at the top of the range; carved oak, pine and plain mahogany mark the bottom. Kingwood alone accounts for 20 titles, satinwood 10, and both concentrate in the upper half.

Decoration moves a piece up from there. Inlay is close to standard in this category, but marquetry, named in 21 titles, gathers noticeably higher. Above that come applied mounts: ormolu appears in 9 titles, and the highest-priced titles pair gilt-metal mounts with porcelain plaques.

Form and styling do the rest. French-named and French-styled pieces, with 'french' in 37 titles and 'french kingwood' in 12, sit above the plain English forms, and the bonheur du jour and freestanding writing desks sit above the ordinary fall-front bureau. A French kingwood bonheur du jour recurs through the upper range; a carved oak bureau does not.

The Antique Victorian Bureau Glossary

Bonheur du jour
Small ladies' writing table with a raised superstructure of drawers and pigeonholes. Spellings wander through bonheur de jour, bon heur du jour and stranger variants still.
Secretaire
A writing compartment built into a chest or cabinet, usually hidden behind a drawer front or a fall. Escritoire is the older word for the same idea and the two are used interchangeably in these titles.
Cylinder bureau
Closed by a curved cylinder or roll that slides back over the writing area rather than folding down. Appears in 19 titles, sometimes with a bookcase top.
Bureau de dame
A lady's bureau, catalogued under the French name in 10 titles. Same furniture as the bonheur du jour, different label.
Burr walnut
Veneer cut from a burr growth on the tree, giving dense swirling figure. Named in 39 titles, more than half of all the walnut ones.
Ormolu
Gilded metal mounts, usually written as 'ormolu mounted'. Nine titles carry it, and they cluster at the top of the range.
Wellington chest
Narrow tall chest with a hinged locking pilaster down one side, sometimes fitted with a secretaire drawer.
Questions people ask

Antique Victorian Bureau: Frequently Asked Questions

What is a bonheur du jour?

A small writing table with a raised back of little drawers and pigeonholes, made in France from the later 18th century as a lady's writing furniture and revived through the 19th.

It is the dominant form under this heading. Between them, 'bonheur' and 'jour' touch a fifth of all titles, and the spelling varies from one listing to the next.

Which timbers turn up most often?

Walnut leads with 74 titles, mahogany follows at 63, then rosewood at 28, oak at 21, kingwood at 20 and satinwood at 10.

Walnut is often specified further as burr walnut, which appears in 39 titles. The exotics gather at the top of the range while oak and pine sit at the bottom.

How are these pieces usually dated?

The dated field spans 1850 to 1930, and 140 of the 263 listings carry a clean year. Those years cluster mid-to-late, with the 1860s busiest at 49 listings and the 1880s next at 35.

The rest are given only by era: 81 as 'Victorian' and 25 as '19th Century'. A third of the category is dated that way.

Are bureau bookcases common in this category?

They are a smaller branch. 'Bookcase' appears in 22 titles and 'cabinet' in 18, making up roughly one in eight pieces, including several cylinder bureau bookcases.

The rest stand lower, either as fall-front bureaux and secretaire chests or as freestanding writing tables with a raised superstructure.

Why do so many titles use French words?

The French vocabulary is unusually strong for a British category. Bonheur du jour, bureau de dame, secretaire abattant and escritoire all appear, alongside 'french' in 37 titles.

That reflects the forms themselves. The small ladies' writing desk and the fall-front secretaire came into English furniture from French models, and the names travelled with them.

What sits at the top of the range?

Ormolu-mounted kingwood pieces and bonheurs with porcelain plaques occupy the highest end, with marquetry and French styling doing much of the lifting below them.

Carved oak and pine bureaux mark the other end.
