Introduction

Antique Painted Bureau

The bureau itself is an old northern European form: a chest or stand with a hinged sloping fall that drops to make the writing surface, with drawers and pigeonholes behind it. What puts one in this category is the finish. The paint may be an original scheme, as it often was on softwood and provincial work, or a later decorative coat applied to a plainer carcass.

The version you'll meet most often on Sellingantiques is a plain English piece dated to the 18th century. "English" appears in 27 of 97 titles and "18th" in 24, and a long run of listings in the middle of the range reads nothing more than "English Painted Bureau", with no timber, no size and no date beyond the century.

Around a sixth of listings carry a superstructure above the fall: 16 bureau bookcases and eight bureau cabinets, including Swedish and Danish painted examples, Rococo and Queen Anne style pieces, and Edwardian satinwood. Painted satinwood work in the late-Georgian taste is a second recurring group, and ladies' writing furniture, bonheur du jour, bureau de dame and secretaire, turns up throughout.

Dating is the dealer's shorthand more often than a firm year. The dated field spans 1790 to 1920, but only 19 listings across the archive carry a clean year against 39 recorded simply as 18th Century and 24 as 19th Century, and titles and dated fields don't always agree.

What sets them apart

Where The Range Splits

The superstructure is the clearest divide. Bookcase and cabinet tops cluster in the upper half of the range, while plain bureaux without one sit lower. Continental work pulls the same way: Swedish and Danish painted bureau bookcases, a Viennese enamel bureau cabinet and a Chinese Canton lacquered desk cabinet all sit above the block of English painted bureaux.

Ground and timber sort the rest. Painted pine and oak country pieces hold the bottom of the range alongside small ladies' desks, with satinwood, kingwood and lacquer occupying the middle and top. A named decorative technique lifts a listing further: Vernis Martin panel work is the only technique named often enough here to form a group, and its examples sit at or near the top.

Then there's what the paint is claimed to be. Titles distinguish original painted decoration from later work, a burnt red umber finish added at some point, or a Georgian bureau given a later blue-on-blue geometric design. Declared original paint reads higher than declared later paint on an otherwise comparable piece.

Questions people ask

Antique Painted Bureau: Frequently Asked Questions

How many painted bureaux come up each year?

Around thirteen a year come to market on Sellingantiques, and 33 different dealers have listed one. That's a wide, shallow trade rather than a few specialists holding the stock.

The archive runs to 97 listings in total, so the category builds slowly.

What does a bonheur du jour mean in these listings?

A bonheur du jour is a small lady's writing table with a raised superstructure of drawers or shelves behind the top. It sits with bureau de dame and secretaire entries in the ladies' writing group.

About one in ten titles here uses "writing" rather than "bureau", and these pieces are described as painted rather than as a bureau proper. Small ladies' desks tend to sit at the lower end of the range.

Is the paint original or added later?

Both turn up, and the titles usually say which. Some read "original painted", others declare a later finish, such as a burnt red umber coat or a blue-on-blue geometric design added to a Georgian carcass.

Original painted schemes were common on softwood and provincial work from the start. Later paint was applied to plainer polished pieces as a decorative update.

Which countries do painted bureaux here come from?

English work dominates, named in 27 titles. Scandinavia is a persistent second thread, with Swedish painted bureaux and bureau bookcases recurring across the range and a single Danish bureau bookcase alongside them.

German, Italian, Venetian and French pieces appear too, the French often with Vernis Martin panels. A Viennese enamel bureau cabinet and a Chinese Canton black lacquered desk cabinet are one-offs.

Why are so many dated just 18th Century?

Century-level entries dominate the dated field: 39 listings say only 18th Century and 24 only 19th Century. Just 19 across the whole archive carry a clean year, and those run from 1790 to 1920.

Named reigns and decades are thin by comparison, with a handful each of Edwardian, Victorian, Georgian and 1900s entries.

The labels aren't always internally consistent, so the century buckets read as shorthand.

Are there unusual one-off painted bureaux?

Yes, and they sit apart from the uniform middle of the range. A Viennese enamel bureau cabinet stands at the top, an order of magnitude above almost everything else.

Others include a Chinese Canton black lacquered desk cabinet, a black-painted oak Gothic bureau with a Green Man, and a Venetian ladies' bureau sold with its matching chair.
