This 18th century Italian bureau combines the practical form of a slant-front writing desk with the decorative quality associated with Italian furniture of the period. Constructed from walnut and painted wood, the piece displays a warm brown palette with a wonderfully aged surface, retaining its original painted decoration, stylised foliate motifs, and painted panel borders. The exterior features an angled fall-front lid, three serpentine drawers fitted with central iron keyhole escutcheons, and shaped bracket feet. The fall front opens to reveal a fitted interior with small drawers, compartments, and a central arched recess, while further decoration continues around the sides and fall. Measuring 120 cm high by 123 cm wide and 63 cm deep, this bureau provides a functional workspace and storage drawers. It suits placement in a study, library, or living room as a characterful writing desk and statement storage piece.

An 18th-century Italian bureau is a slope-front writing desk built over drawers, originating from the Italian peninsula during the Baroque and Rococo periods. These pieces are often distinguished by hand-painted decorative panels, serpentine drawer fronts, and regional artisan craftsmanship.

These bureaux were primarily constructed using native European woods such as walnut, poplar, or pine. The exterior surfaces were typically finished with tempera paints, varnishes, or painted faux-marbling techniques, accompanied by hand-forged iron or cast brass hardware.

Authentic period pieces exhibit signs of age including natural craquelure in the painted finish, hand-cut dovetail joints, irregular hand-planed timber backboards, and authentic wear around keyholes and footings.

A painted bureau functions well as a focal piece in a hallway, study, or living room. Position it against a neutral wall and pair it with contemporary lighting or abstract artwork to create a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and modern design.

Keep the piece away from direct sunlight and artificial heat sources to prevent timber movement and paint flaking. Dust gently using a dry microfibre cloth and avoid using harsh chemical sprays or modern waxes that could alter the historical finish.
