Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An Edwardian hand-painted satinwood bureau is a slant-front writing desk produced during the early 20th century, drawing inspiration from late 18th-century Sheraton and Hepplewhite designs. It features a drop-down flap that opens to reveal an interior writing surface and storage compartments, resting atop a chest of drawers.

These bureaux were constructed using high-grade satinwood veneers known for their silky, shimmering golden grain, often applied over a hardwood carcass such as mahogany or oak. Decorative motifs were hand-painted directly onto the wood surface using oil-based paints and sealed with protective varnish.

Authentic pieces feature genuine timber grain visible beneath translucent varnish, hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, and detailed brushwork exhibiting subtle variations consistent with hand painting. Reproductions often use printed transfers instead of hand-executed motifs or feature uniform synthetic finishes.

Position the bureau in a dedicated home office, hallway, or living space as a focal point. Pair the warm timber tones with light, neutral walls and contemporary brass accent lighting to complement the intricate decorative details without overcrowding the room.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, keeping the item out of direct sunlight to prevent timber fading and varnish degradation. Apply high-quality beeswax sparingly to unpainted timber, avoiding abrasive cleaners or rubbing directly over painted motifs.
