How many painted bureaux come up each year?

Around thirteen a year come to market on Sellingantiques, and 33 different dealers have listed one. That's a wide, shallow trade rather than a few specialists holding the stock. The archive runs to 97 listings in total, so the category builds slowly.

What does a bonheur du jour mean in these listings?

A bonheur du jour is a small lady's writing table with a raised superstructure of drawers or shelves behind the top. It sits with bureau de dame and secretaire entries in the ladies' writing group. About one in ten titles here uses "writing" rather than "bureau", and these pieces are described as painted rather than as a bureau proper. Small ladies' desks tend to sit at the lower end of the range.

Is the paint original or added later?

Both turn up, and the titles usually say which. Some read "original painted", others declare a later finish, such as a burnt red umber coat or a blue-on-blue geometric design added to a Georgian carcass. Original painted schemes were common on softwood and provincial work from the start. Later paint was applied to plainer polished pieces as a decorative update.

Which countries do painted bureaux here come from?

English work dominates, named in 27 titles. Scandinavia is a persistent second thread, with Swedish painted bureaux and bureau bookcases recurring across the range and a single Danish bureau bookcase alongside them. German, Italian, Venetian and French pieces appear too, the French often with Vernis Martin panels. A Viennese enamel bureau cabinet and a Chinese Canton black lacquered desk cabinet are one-offs.

Why are so many dated just 18th Century?

Century-level entries dominate the dated field: 39 listings say only 18th Century and 24 only 19th Century. Just 19 across the whole archive carry a clean year, and those run from 1790 to 1920. Named reigns and decades are thin by comparison, with a handful each of Edwardian, Victorian, Georgian and 1900s entries. The labels aren't always internally consistent, so the century buckets read as shorthand.

Are there unusual one-off painted bureaux?

Yes, and they sit apart from the uniform middle of the range. A Viennese enamel bureau cabinet stands at the top, an order of magnitude above almost everything else. Others include a Chinese Canton black lacquered desk cabinet, a black-painted oak Gothic bureau with a Green Man, and a Venetian ladies' bureau sold with its matching chair.
