This nineteenth-century French Louis XV revival slant-front bureau desk consists of warm brown kingwood with parquetry veneer, ormolu mounts, a porcelain plaque, and brass hardware. The freestanding piece stands 112 cm high, 71 cm wide, and 51 cm deep, supported on shaped cabriole legs with ormolu mounts and ormolu feet. Details include an ornate ormolu gallery above two small drawers, ormolu beading framing the slope, and a central porcelain medallion depicting figures within a gilt mount. The fall-front opens to a fitted interior with four drawers, pigeon holes, and a velvet writing surface, positioned above a single long frieze drawer. In a contemporary home, this writing desk serves as a functional workspace in a study or home office, or as a decorative statement bureau in a living room, hallway, or bedroom. The polished back allows the item to stand away from walls in open-plan spaces. The compact footprint makes the desk suitable for smaller rooms while providing surface area and internal storage compartments for correspondence and stationery.

The bureau de dame originated in 18th-century France during the reign of Louis XV as a refined, compact writing cabinet designed specifically for personal correspondence in private boudoirs. Characterised by a slant-front writing slope and delicate cabriole legs, the form remained popular throughout the 19th century during the Rococo Revival era.

These bureaux were typically framed in solid hardwoods and veneered with exotic woods such as kingwood, rosewood, or tulipwood arranged in parquetry or marquetry patterns. Decorative accents were crafted from gilded bronze, known as ormolu, and occasionally featured hand-painted porcelain medallions inset into the timber.

Authentic 19th-century examples feature hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, heavy mercury-gilded or cast brass ormolu mounts fitted precisely to the timber contours, and natural patination on the underside and drawer linings. Look for evidence of hand-carved casing details, original locks, and shrinkage lines consistent with aged wood veneer.

A classic French bureau serves as a focal piece in a hallway, bedroom alcove, or living area when contrasted with neutral wall finishes and clean-lined modern accessories. Pairing the detailed woodwork with simple contemporary artwork or modern lighting balances traditional craftsmanship with updated interior schemes.

Keep the piece away from direct sunlight and central heating radiators to prevent timber veneer from lifting or drying out. Dust the woodwork with a soft, lint-free cloth and apply high-grade beeswax sparingly; clean ormolu gently using a dry soft brush without harsh chemical polishes to protect the delicate gilded surface.
