Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Sheraton Revival Davenport desk dates from 1890 and stands in rich brown rosewood with satinwood inlay, leather, and brass. The piece rises on curved cabriole front supports fitted with original brass castors and features a sloped leather writing surface, a stationary tray compartment to the top, and four side drawers with brass drop handles. Marquetry swags and floral motifs decorate the writing slope front, the top stationery box, and the superstructure sides. Measuring 91 cm high, 56 cm wide, and 51 cm deep, the desk functions practically as a compact workstation in a home study, library, or drawing room. The structure provides a dedicated writing surface combined with secure storage drawers underneath the slope and along the side.

FAQs

Sheraton Revival furniture, popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, reinterprets late 18th-century designs by Thomas Sheraton. Key characteristics include graceful proportions, slender curved or turned legs, fine veneers like rosewood and satinwood, and delicate inlaid marquetry motifs such as urns, swags, and bellflowers.

Davenport desks from the late Victorian and Edwardian periods are commonly constructed from dense hardwoods such as rosewood, mahogany, or walnut. They frequently feature decorative satinwood or boxwood marquetry inlays, gilt-tooled leather writing surfaces, and cast brass handles and castors.

Authentic pieces exhibit traditional joinery such as hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawers, original brass locks or keyholes, and genuine age-related wear to the finish. Look for a hinged sloping top revealing a fitted interior and functional drawers mounted exclusively on one side with matching blind drawers opposite.

Due to its compact footprint, a Davenport desk serves effectively as a dedicated writing nook in a contemporary bedroom, hallway, or living room alcove. Pairing the dark inlaid timber with clean neutral walls and modern accent lighting creates a refined contrast between historic craftsmanship and modern design.

Keep the piece away from direct sunlight and artificial heat sources to prevent timber cracking and veneer lift. Clean regularly with a soft, dry cotton cloth, and apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year to maintain the wood lustre and protect the surface inlay.
