This 18th century Irish snap top table is an occasional table in the Irish Georgian style, made from dark brown mahogany with brass fittings. The piece has a square top above a central turned column stem, supported by tripod cabriole legs terminating in brass castors, with detailed carving visible on the base and a decorative moulded edge around the top. The table measures 73 cm high, 78 cm wide, and 70 cm deep, offering a practical surface for everyday use. Positioned at the end of a sofa, this table serves as a convenient spot for lamps, books, or drinks in an English Country House setting. The dark timber finish and classic silhouette integrate easily into traditional living spaces, while the tilt top mechanism allows for flexible placement when space is at a premium.

A snap top table features a hinged tabletop mechanism secured by a catch, allowing the surface to tilt vertically for compact storage when not in use.

These tables were predominantly constructed from dense West Indian or Cuban mahogany, supported by turned timber pillars and brass catch components.

Authentic period examples feature hand-cut dovetail joints on the block support, hand-turned pedestals, original brass latches, and natural wear along the tripod legs.

Position the table beside an armchair as an occasional drink surface, or tilt the top vertically to display the timber grain when stored in an alcove or corner.

Maintain the finish by dusting with a dry microfiber cloth and applying a thin coat of natural beeswax polish annually, keeping the wood away from direct heat sources.
