The height of the cherub has been measured when it is hung on it's red ribbon. Really nicely patinated guilt cherub. This cherub is made of carved wood with a gesso gilt finish. A lovely decorative piece.

You can arrange your own transport or collect in person. We ship worldwide and have extensive experience of wrapping carefully so you can shop with confidence! We often deliver for free to mainland UK - please contact us to discuss.

You can also view items at our restoration workshop by appointment only.

Our lighting has all been lovingly restored, tested and earthed but will need to be installed by a qualified electrician. All of our furniture has been through our antique restoration workshop.

Cherubs, historically known as putti, gained widespread popularity during the Renaissance and Baroque periods as decorative elements in classical architecture and religious art. By the late 19th century, Baroque Revival trends saw these figures reproduced for private residential interiors, symbolising classicism and architectural ornamentation.

These sculptures were carved from solid wood, such as lime or pine, and coated with layers of gesso plaster to smooth the surface. Gold leaf was then applied using water gilding or oil gilding techniques before being burnished to create a luminous metallic finish.

Authentic pieces display evidence of hand carving, including subtle tool marks beneath the surface finish. Look for fine craquelure in the gesso layer, natural wear where the underlying red or grey bole grounds show through the gilding, and age-related oxidation.

A carved gilt figure can be suspended above a mantelpiece or styled within a gallery wall alongside framed artwork to create contrast. Placing gilded accents against dark or textured backdrops highlights their sculptural silhouette and metallic finish.
