Description

This rare late 19th-century Art Nouveau porcelain figural bowl, made by the Amphora porcelain factory in Turn-Teplitz, Austria (now the Czech Republic), features a stunning composition of a maiden and cherub. The bowl, designed by Stellmacher around 1897, is shaped like a shell and is a remarkable example of the Art Nouveau style with flowing lines and exquisite craftsmanship. The maiden is elegantly posed in soft draped garments, while the cherub, symbolising innocence, holds a rose as he plays beside her.

The base bears the impressed “Amphora” mark, a crown, and the pattern number 1027. Although the RSt&K mark has been erased, its original placement remains visible in the photographs.

Alfred Stellmacher developed ivory porcelain in the 1870s, celebrated for its soft yellowish tone and matte finish, which allowed for intricate modelling and design. Amphora, founded in 1892 by Riessner, Stellmacher, and Kessel (RSt&K), became renowned for producing luxury Art Nouveau porcelain and received numerous awards, including the Gold Medal at the 1889 Paris Exhibition and accolades at the 1893 Columbian Exposition.

Art Nouveau design is characterised by organic motifs, fluid asymmetrical lines, and naturalistic forms inspired by plants, flowers, and the human figure, which became prominent in European decorative arts around the turn of the twentieth century.

These pieces were typically cast in fine porcelain or terracotta, hand-glazed with soft polychrome or matte finishes, and often detailed with metallic accents before being fired in high-temperature kilns.

Authentic pieces often feature impressed maker marks, registration numbers, or artisan signatures on the base, alongside natural ageing characteristics such as fine crazing in the glaze and hand-painted detailing.

Such statement objects function well as focal points on entrance tables, sideboards, or open shelving, where their sculptural qualities contrast against clean, minimalist architectural lines.

Dust gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and avoid using chemical cleaners, immersion in water, or abrasive materials to protect the delicate hand-painted surfaces and historic glaze.
