Daisy Makeig-jones For Wedgwood, Fairyland Lustre Goldfish Octagonal Bowl, C. 1915

An absolutely delightful and delicate octagonal lustre bone china footed bowl, designed by Daisy Makeig-Jones for Wedgwood. The exterior features a gradient of purple hues, ranging from light to dark, with hand-painted goldfish rendered in a unique style using brush strokes, and gilded filigree ornaments adorning the top edge both inside and out. The interior boasts a rich mother-of-pearl glaze, with the center decorated by a bold gilded Chinese Emperor dragon, an ancient symbol of fertility, life, light, strength, and wisdom. The inner surface of the bowl also features several hieroglyphics in gold. The piece is stamped on the base with the Wedgwood Portland vase mark and the pattern number 4831.

In 1909, Daisy Makeig-Jones was hired by the Wedgwood firm in Staffordshire, England, to decorate pottery. Of all the company''s ware, the most highly prized and keenly sought after are the Fairyland Lustre pieces. Daisy’s Fairyland Lustre line first appeared in late 1915 and reached its height of production in the 1920s.
 
Daisy Makeig-Jones was one of the great women designers of the early 20th century. Her Lustrewares gained a well-deserved status as fine art. Due to the variation and unpredictability of the glazes and decorative techniques, as well as Daisy’s penchant for experimentation, each Lustre piece is truly unique.
