Daisy Makeig-jones, Lighting Diaper Lustre Bowl, Wedgwood, C. 1915

£400    $491    €477
This antique Boston-shaped bowl features gilded decorative rims, mother-of-pearl lustre patterns, and a lighting diaper design on the exterior. The interior is finished in dark orange lustre with crimson mottling, goldfish motifs, and gilded ornamentation along the inner diameter.

Pay particular attention to the mother-of-pearl tones on the exterior. At first glance, the subtle mesh-like pattern might seem understated, but the shimmering, iridescent colors create a striking visual effect, especially under proper lighting.

The base is marked with the Wedgwood Portland Vase maker''s mark and the pattern number Z4826. Susannah Margaretta ''Daisy'' Makeig-Jones was a renowned pottery designer for Wedgwood, best known for her ''Fairyland Lustre'' and ''Ordinary Lustre'' series. In 1914, Daisy became a full-fledged designer with her own studio. She pioneered a captivating style that combined innovative techniques such as underglaze mottling, overglaze graining, and iridescence, complemented by fanciful designs outlined in gilt.

The first pattern in the ''First Ten Ordinary Lustre'' series debuted in October 1914. These ten patterns, numbered consecutively from Z4823 to Z4832, showcased a variety of lustre color combinations. This particular bowl, numbered Z4826, is the fourth pattern in the series. The Ordinary Lustre range was produced from 1914 to 1929 and has become extremely collectible. Limited production runs, along with a growing appreciation for Daisy Makeig-Jones'' innovative work, have led to a consistent rise in value over the years. Many collectors regard Daisy Makeig-Jones'' designs as both an artistic treasure and a sound investment due to their historical and aesthetic significance.
