This interesting COLLECTION OF SIX EARLY 19th CENTURY BLUE AND WHITE TRANSFER PRINTED PLATES were all made in STAFFORDSHIRE.

The Group consists of:

Pomerania by John Ridgway (1830-55) 10.25 inches (26 cm)

Abbey by Samuel Keeling & Co (1840-50) 10.25 inches (26 cm)

Semi-Nankeen China probably Minton c1840 9.75 inches (25 cm)

American Marine by Francis Morley & Co (1845-58) 9 inches (23 cm)

India Vase Maker Unknown c1840 9.5 inches (24.5 cm)

Crusader by Deakin and Bailey (1828-30) 9 inches (23 cm)

They are all in good condition with no restoration.

They would make a great decorative feature.

Staffordshire transferware refers to earthenware produced in Staffordshire, England, decorated via a copper-plate printing process developed in the 18th century. Tissue paper was printed with cobalt ink and transferred onto unfired or biscuit ceramic before glazing, allowing intricate pastoral and maritime patterns to be mass-produced.

These ceramics were crafted from refined earthenware or pearlware bodies and finished with a clear lead glaze. Cobalt oxide was the primary pigment used for blue decoration because it could withstand the high kiln temperatures required for firing without burning off or discolouring.

Authentic pieces often exhibit stilt marks on the reverse from kiln stacking, slight misalignments in the transfer print, and a characteristic bluish tint in pooled glaze areas. Maker marks, impressed numbers, or painter tally marks on the underside also help verify period production.
