Description

This wonderful PAIR OF ENGLISH GEORGIAN BLUE AND WHITE TRANSFER PRINTED PLATES date from circa 1820.

Unmarked but believed to be from either the Liverpool Herculaneum Pottery or William Walsh of Newcastle Street, Burslem, Staffordshire Potteries.

The transfer print, which shows the MAUSOLEUM OF SULTAN PURVEIZ Near ALLAHABAD and the procession of the MOGHUL or MOHAMMEDAN GOVERNOR OF DELHI, is very well detailed and sharp.

Good condition with no restoration.

Diameter: 9.75 inches (26 cm)

Transferware is earthenware or porcelain decorated via copper-plate engravings transferred onto thin paper and pressed onto the unglazed ceramic body prior to firing and glazing.

These items were predominantly constructed from refined white earthenware or pearlware, coloured using cobalt oxide ink applied under a translucent lead glaze.

Authentic period pieces display subtle transfer seams, underglaze maker marks or title prints on the reverse, stilt marks from kiln firing, and minor irregularities in print registration.
