Aubusson tapestries originate from the town of Aubusson in central France, renowned for producing hand-woven textiles and furnishings since the 16th century.

Traditional Aubusson pieces are hand-woven using wool and silk threads on a vertical loom, employing a technique that produces a flat weave without pile, similar to a heavy tapestry.

Authenticity is identified through hand-woven construction characteristics, natural wool and silk fibre ageing, traditional muted vegetal dye palettes, and historical design motifs typical of French weaving centres.

An antique textile adds texture and historical contrast when placed against clean, modern upholstery or paired with neutral linens to highlight its intricate craftsmanship.

Preservation requires gentle surface cleaning with a soft brush attachment on a low-suction vacuum, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent fading, and professional textile conservation when necessary.
