This Victorian centre table dates from 1860 and takes an oval shape in warm brown tones. The top displays book-matched burr walnut veneer with intricate floral marquetry inlay at the corners, edged by a simple moulding. Beneath the surface, a central pedestal comprises four turned walnut columns surrounded by a central urn turning, leading down to carved, shaped cabriole legs terminating in original castors. The wood exhibits visible natural grain variations and minor surface wear consistent with age and regular use. The table measures 68 cm high, 92 cm wide, and 53 cm deep. Placed in a reception room, study, or hallway, it serves as a central display surface for decorative objects, a reading lamp, or floral arrangements, functioning equally well in a traditional period interior or an English country house setting.

FAQs

A Victorian burr walnut centre table is a 19th-century decorative table crafted from highly figured walnut wood taken from tree burrs. Designed to sit in the middle of a room or foyer, these pieces typically feature oval tops, intricate marquetry inlay, and carved central pedestal bases.

Victorian cabinetmakers commonly utilized solid walnut or mahogany frames overlaid with book-matched burr walnut veneers. Intricate floral patterns were created using boxwood or fruitwood inlays, supported by hand-carved pedestal columns, quadruple splayed legs, and concealed brass castors.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut marquetry rather than modern laser cutting, natural variations in veneer grain, and period-correct joinery underneath the tabletop. Look for genuine age patination, original brass castors, and hand-turned column detailing consistent with mid-to-late 19th-century manufacturing.

Position the table as a focal point in an entry foyer, bay window, or living room alcove. Pair its dark, patterned grain with neutral wall tones, contemporary ceramics, or minimal floral arrangements to balance traditional craftsmanship with contemporary aesthetics.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish occasionally to nourish the timber. Keep the table away from direct sunlight, central heating radiators, and damp conditions to prevent the delicate veneers and inlays from warping or lifting.
