A Victorian centre table rendered in warm brown burr walnut with fruitwood inlay. The piece displays a serpentine shaped top edged with marquetry decoration, supported by heavily carved cabriole legs terminating in scroll feet. The timbers show a glossy polished finish with visible grain patterns across the large top surface. Measuring 72.5 cm high, 153 cm wide and 118 cm deep, the table provides generous surface space for daily domestic use. Placed centrally in a principal reception room, library or large hallway, it functions as a display surface for lamps, books or decorative objects while adding traditional character to the interior.

FAQs

A Victorian centre table is a decorative piece of furniture designed to stand in the middle of a room, such as a foyer or drawing room, rather than against a wall. Popular during the 19th century, these tables feature detailed timber veneers and decorative shapes to serve as a visual focal point.

Craftsmen primarily utilized native and imported hardwoods, with walnut, burr walnut, mahogany, and rosewood being the most prevalent. Marquetry borders were frequently constructed using lighter contrasting woods such as boxwood or fruitwood.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved details, original brass castors, natural oxidisation on the underside of the timber, and hand-cut veneer layers. Hand-cut marquetry inlays will show slight variations, and the hardware beneath the tabletop often retains original iron or brass fixings.

Place the table centrally in an entrance hall or living space, pairing it with neutral walls to highlight the complex wood grain. Modern ceramic vases or minimal books placed on top create a balanced juxtaposition between contemporary design and traditional craftsmanship.

Keep the timber away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking and fading of the veneer. Apply a high-quality beeswax polish twice a year using a soft cloth, following the direction of the wood grain to protect the finish.
