FAQs

An 18th-century wooden mortar is a traditional kitchen and apothecary vessel used alongside a pestle to grind herbs, spices, and medical ingredients by hand.

Antique mortars were traditionally crafted from dense hardwoods such as walnut, boxwood, lignum vitae, or fruitwood to withstand the repeated impact of grinding.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit hand-turned tool marks, deep patination from centuries of handling, and natural wear patterns consistent with age and domestic utility.

Such objects can be displayed as sculptural decorative accents on open shelving, sideboards, or coffee tables to introduce rustic texture and historical character to a room.

Preserve antique treen by keeping it away from direct sunlight and extreme temperature fluctuations, applying occasional light coats of neutral beeswax to nourish the dry wood.
