This nineteenth-century Aesthetic Movement card table is made of ebonised wood and brass, finished in black with incised gilt detailing. The rectangular fold-over top sits above four spiral-turned legs and a lower spindle-turned stretcher shelf, raised on original brass castors. Visible details include a repaired break to one leg, minor wear along the edges, and fine gilt line decoration on the frame and legs. The table stands 74 cm high, 92 cm wide, and 46 cm deep. It fits well in a gentleman's library or an empty corner of a traditional living room, providing a functional surface for card games or display.

FAQs

Emerging in the late nineteenth century, Aesthetic Movement furniture emphasised artistic beauty, clean geometric lines, ebonised wood finishes, and subtle Oriental or Anglo-Japanese decorative influences over heavy Victorian ornament.

Cabinetmakers commonly used hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or beech, often finished with ebonised black stain, incised gilt highlights, and interior surfaces lined with baize fabric.

Look for characteristics of late Victorian craftsmanship, such as fine spiral-turned support legs, spindle gallery stretchers, incised gilt detailing, original brass castors, and period-correct folding mechanisms.

Position the piece against a wall as a refined console table when closed, pairing the dark silhouette with contemporary art, ceramic vases, or brass table lamps for textural contrast.

Dust gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding chemical sprays or excess water which can dissolve traditional gilding and damage delicate ebonised surface finishes.
