This nineteenth-century Anglo-Burmese side table is made from solid teak with a rich dark brown finish. The circular top has a smooth, plain central panel surrounded by a wide border of high-relief foliate and architectural carving, complemented by a heavily carved twisted stem and three zoomorphic tripod feet. The piece stands 71 cm high, with a width and depth of 51 cm. In a modern interior, this compact table sits practically beside an armchair or at the end of a sofa to hold a small lamp, book or drink. Its traditional craftsmanship and detailed decoration suit a study, library or drawing room as a decorative accent surface.

Anglo-Burmese carved furniture emerged during the 19th century when British influence in Southeast Asia inspired local Burmese artisans to apply traditional woodcarving techniques to Western furniture forms. These pieces typically features intricate high-relief carvings depicting native flora, mythical creatures, and complex foliate patterns executed in native hardwoods.

Most antique Burmese furniture from this era was constructed using dense, locally sourced teak hardwood. Teak was favoured for its durability, natural water resistance, and fine grain, which allowed craftsmen to carve highly detailed designs without splintering the timber.

Authentic pieces display deep, hand-carved relief work with slight variations, asymmetrical tool marks on unseen undersides, and traditional joinery rather than modern screws. Look for characteristic motifs such as mythical chinthe lions, dragons, and dense foliate foliage carved into heavy teak.

Pair dense, dark carved wood tables alongside modern upholstered furniture, such as a neutral linen sofa or armchair, to create textual contrast. Position the table where light highlights the pierced openwork and carved relief without overwhelming small contemporary spaces.

Dust the detailed carving regularly using a soft, dry bristle brush or lint-free cloth to clear debris from crevices. Apply a quality natural beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year to nourish the wood, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners or placement near direct heat sources.
