This antique side table originates from Burma and dates from 1880, embodying the Anglo-Burmese style produced for the export market. Constructed from dark brown teak and hardwood with a polished dark timber finish, the piece features a circular top bordered by dense, intricately pierced and relief-carved foliate and floral motifs. A lace-like, deeply undercut apron hangs below the edge with elaborate hand-carved detail. The central pedestal displays intertwined serpents or vine forms rising from a tripod support, with legs richly carved in similar foliage patterns that terminate in stylised animal or claw feet, including visible carved mythical beast heads near the floor. The table stands 76 cm high, 69 cm wide, and 69 cm deep, offering practical proportions for everyday placement. In a modern home, this piece suits a gentleman's library, a living room, or an empty corner as an accent surface to display decorative objects or books.

Anglo-Burmese furniture refers to decorative wooden items produced in Burma (now Myanmar) during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, primarily for British colonial residents and export markets. These pieces blend traditional European furniture forms with intricate local carving techniques.

These tables were typically hand-carved from dense regional hardwoods such as teak or rosewood. Construction features extensive deep carving, openwork or pierced aprons, interlocked tripod bases, and joints secured with traditional timber joinery rather than modern metal fasteners.

Authentic period examples demonstrate hand-tool marks, natural variation in carving depth, deep patina, and dark colouration in the timber recesses. Common motifs include mythological beasts such as chinthe or dragons, entwined foliage, and peacock imagery.

A deeply carved dark wood side table functions effectively as a sculptural accent piece. Positioned next to clean-lined, modern upholstered seating or neutral walls, the dense texture and dark finish provide visual contrast without overwhelming contemporary spaces.

Dust regularly using a soft, dry brush or microfibre cloth to reach deep carved recesses. Apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year, and maintain the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage or splitting.
