FAQs

Rocking horses evolved from medieval tilt-training devices into childrens toys by the 17th century. During the Victorian and Edwardian eras, makers like F. H. Ayres and Lines Brothers perfected production, creating durable carved wooden toys that became nursery centerpieces.

Traditional rocking horses were typically constructed from carved hardwoods such as pine, ash, or beech, often over a hollow wooden body. They featured genuine horsehair manes and tails, leather tack, and were mounted on bow rockers or safety swing stands.

Authenticity is identified through construction marks, tool traces, traditional materials like horsehair and genuine leather, and characteristic paint or gesso crazing. Maker stamps, often found beneath the belly or on the rocker rails, provide definitive attribution.

An antique rocking horse functions as a sculptural statement piece in traditional nurseries, living rooms, or hallways. Pairing the classic wood and leather textures with neutral backgrounds highlights its handcrafted heritage without overwhelming contemporary spaces.

Preserve antique wooden toys by keeping them away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity to prevent wood splitting and paint flaking. Clean gently with a dry, soft cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners that can damage historical finishes.
