FAQs

Victorian frames typically feature heavy ornamentation, classical motifs such as acanthus leaves and floral garlands, and elaborate moulded gesso or carved wooden details finished in gold leaf or gilt.

These pieces were commonly constructed from pine or hardwood substrates, coated with layers of gesso, hand-carved or moulded, and finally water-gilded or oil-gilded with genuine gold leaf or metal leaf.

Authentic period pieces exhibit signs of age such as micro-cracking in the gesso, oxidisation of the metallic leaf, hand-cut joinery at the corners, and older backing materials or hardware.

Pairing an ornate gilded frame with minimalist modern artwork or leaving it empty as a sculptural wall hanging creates a striking contrast between historical texture and clean, contemporary spaces.

Clean gently with a soft, dry ostrich feather duster to remove surface dust, avoiding any moisture, liquid cleaners, or abrasive cloths that can damage the delicate gilded surface.
