FAQs

Originating in eighteenth-century France during the Rococo period, giltwood console tables were designed to stand against hall walls as architectural focal points. Characterised by asymmetrical curves, acanthus leaf carvings, and organic motifs, they reflected the ornate decorative arts favored by the French court.

These tables are traditionally constructed from carved wooden frames, often lime wood or pine, coated in layers of gesso and finished with gold leaf gilding. Tops are typically executed in heavy carved natural marble, such as Carrara or Breche, shaped to match the contours of the base.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of age such as hand-carved joinery, natural wear or red bole showing through rubbed gold leaf gilding, and historic plaster shrinkage cracks. The marble tops often feature hand-chiseled undersides and precise edge profiling fitting the wooden frame underneath.

Place the table against a neutral or dark backdrop in an entryway or hallway to create visual contrast. Pairing the detailed carved gold frame with a modern oversized artwork or contemporary mirror above balances the traditional ornament with modern minimalism.

Dust the gilded wood frame gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding water or liquid polish which can dissolve water gilding. Clean the marble top using a damp cloth with mild soap, ensuring spills are wiped immediately to prevent staining on porous stone surfaces.
