Rare Georgian Brass Banded Coal Bucket C. 1750

18th century
Description

A rarely found original Georgian period coal, log and kindling bucket with thick brass banding, solid brass hoop handle and brass mounted handle to front.

Like everything made by the Georgians this was made to last and is already 275 years old.

It has been used regularly for most of its life and yet is still in excellent and entirely usable condition.

Coopered in the same way as a barrel would be, the oak staves cut and shaped before being fitted together without glue and then bound by thick brass straps which are overlapped and riveted along one side.

A lovely piece of vernacular Georgian furniture and rather unusual to find a coal bucket or scuttle in such superb original condition after centuries of use.

Dimensions are:

17 inches high to top of handle when raised, 12 inches high to top of oak lip, 15.5 inches wide and 12 inches deep side to side (all maximum)

Date of Manufacture

Webberley Antiques has dated this Georgian Brass Coal Bucket to the 18th Century.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 18TH CENTURY:
Coopered oak staves bound with brass straps: traditional barrel-making technique.
Copper dome rivets on the strap joints: hand-hammered metalwork.
Varied hand-cut slots on the brass fixing screws: early fastening method.
Dry, oxidised interior with visible wood grain: long exposure to domestic use.
Smooth surface wear across the cast swing handle: many years of lifting.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This Georgian coal bucket originates from the eighteenth century. Constructed using staved oak with a dark brown finish, the piece features thick brass banding secured by copper rivets, an overhead swing handle, and a front handle mounting. The timber shows natural grain variation and surface wear consistent with age, while the polished metal components exhibit a bright reflective surface. Measuring 43 cm high to the top of the raised handle, 30 cm high to the oak rim, 39 cm wide, and 30 cm deep, the container is sized for practical storage. Suitable for placement beside a fireplace hearth in an English country house setting, the bucket functions as a practical holder for coal, logs, and kindling. The open top allows easy access to contents while the sturdy handle supports lifting and carrying. The vernacular style integrates well into traditional interiors, complementing period hearths and wood-burning stoves while providing robust everyday storage for hearth accessories.

During the 18th century, coal buckets were practical household containers designed to carry fuel from storage to domestic open hearths. Wealthier British households utilized timber buckets reinforced with brass bands to withstand heavy use while matching existing fireside furnishings.

These items were crafted using coopered timber staves held together by heavy sheet brass bands and secured with hand-hammered brass or copper rivets. Overhead swing handles were forged from solid brass or iron to facilitate carrying heavy fuel loads.

Authentic pieces from this period exhibit irregularities in hand-punched rivets, evidence of hand-carved wooden staves, and uneven natural oxidisation on the metalwork. The timber typically demonstrates natural shrinkage and aging around the metal fixings.

An antique coal scuttle serves effectively as fireside storage for modern kindling or logs beside a wood-burning stove. It can also function as a planter or decorative vessel placed in an entryway or living room alcove.

Maintain the timber by dusting with a dry cloth and occasionally applying natural beeswax paste to prevent the wood from drying out. Avoid harsh chemical polishes on the brass to preserve the historic patina and surface oxidisation.
