This Edwardian brass coal bucket or planter stands 45 cm high, 28 cm wide, and 28 cm deep, proportioned for functional placement in a domestic setting. Dating from circa 1900, the cylindrical piece is fashioned from polished brass in a warm gold colour, complete with an internal liner and a lift-up domed lid topped with a central finial. Details include a raised rope-twist trim encircling the upper section, drop-ring handles mounted at the sides, and four stylised paw feet elevating the base. Suitable for positioning beside a fireplace hearth for fuel storage, the container serves equally well as an indoor planter or jardinière for botanical displays in a living room, study, or hallway. The surfaces are cleaned and polished, showing a smooth metallic finish with no cracks or structural breaks.

FAQs

An Edwardian brass coal bucket, historically referred to as a purdonium or coal scuttle, was produced during the early 20th century to hold coal or kindling near a domestic fireplace.

These vessels were typically formed from sheet brass with cast brass components such as handles and feet, and they often contained an internal iron or zinc liner to protect the brass outer casing.

Authentic period examples demonstrate period-appropriate metalwork techniques, brazed or riveted seams, heavy cast fittings, and visible signs of natural age or oxidisation in unpolished areas.

In addition to storing logs or kindling on a fireplace hearth, these lidded brass containers function effectively as indoor planters, umbrella stands, or decorative hallway storage vessels.

Regular dusting with a soft cloth keeps the surface clean, while occasional application of a specialised brass polish maintains the bright metallic lustre without stripping natural oxidisation from recessed details.
