Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1750s:
Hand-cut drawer dovetails: cabinet work before machine cutting.
Wooden knuckle hinge on the swinging rear leg: mid-eighteenth-century gate support.
Corner candlestick corners and dished guinea wells: designed for card play around 1750.
Natural sun-fading and old surface marks across the solid top: long-term domestic use.
Slender cabriole legs ending in pad feet: classic George II shaping.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Georgian period games table dates from 1750 and is constructed from mahogany with a green baize playing surface and brass hardware. The fold-over top reveals corner candle dish recesses and counter wells, complemented by a front drawer fitted with a drop handle. The dark wood has a polished warm brown finish that highlights the timber grain, supported on slim cabriole legs with shaped tops and pad feet. Measuring 71 cm high, 86.5 cm wide and 40.5 cm deep, this versatile piece functions as a compact side table against a wall or opens to seat four players. It suits placement in a study, library or living room as a functional surface for card games or general use.

FAQs

A Georgian games table is an 18th-century folding table created for card and board games, designed to function as an occasional wall table when closed and expand into a felt- or baize-lined surface when open.

These tables were primarily constructed from solid dense mahogany or walnut, featuring woven wool baize playing surfaces, brass hinges, and cast brass drawer handles.

Authentic mid-18th-century card tables feature hand-cut dovetail drawer joinery, recessed candle sockets at the corners, shallow dished counter wells, hand-carved cabriole legs, and rear gate-leg mechanisms to support the open top.

When folded, the table functions as a console table in a hallway or behind a sofa, while opening it creates a dedicated gaming station in a living room, study, or library.

Maintain the mahogany timber by applying natural beeswax along the grain, keep the surface away from direct heat sources, and clean the wool baize using a soft brush rather than liquid cleaners.
