Antique Edwardian Mahogany Envelope Card Table C.1905

1900 - 1920
Description

An Edwardian mahogany card table, the quartered, finely figured envelope top revolving to deploy an automatic leaf-rising pin and opening to an inset green baize playing surface with carved counter wells, set over a moulded frieze fitted with a single drawer, all raised on slender cabriole legs, united by shaped stretchers with a central platform and terminating in original castors.

Bearing the original enamelled maker’s badge of Thomas Edwards & Sons, Newcastle-under-Lyme, the table reflects the precise engineering and fine timber selection that characterised one of Staffordshire's most prominent workshops of the day, and securely dates the table to before the firm’s 1906 change of ownership.

Very good antique condition, with only minor surface wear consistent with age. The mechanical swivel action operates smoothly. Structurally sound and ready to place.

English, circa 1905.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An envelope card table is a specialised gaming table featuring four triangular leaves hinged to a central top. When rotated and unfolded like an envelope, the leaves open to reveal a baize-covered playing surface while preserving floor space when closed.

Edwardian card tables were commonly constructed from hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, or walnut. Playing surfaces were lined with wool baize, and tables were completed with brass hinges, drawer pulls, and castors.

Authentic Edwardian card tables typically feature smooth swivel mechanisms beneath the tabletop, hand-dovetailed drawer joinery, period-appropriate brass hardware, and light wear along the leaf joints and legs consistent with age.

When closed, an envelope card table serves as a compact occasional or side table in a living room, hallway, or study. It can be opened into a functional gaming table for evening entertainment when required.

Apply a natural beeswax polish along the grain of the mahogany wood to protect the finish, keeping it clear of direct heat and moisture. Use a soft brush to clear dust from the baize playing surface without pulling the fabric fibres.
