Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian English country house display column offers a distinctive platform for displaying busts, urns, or taxidermy within a traditional interior. Fashioned from warm brown pine timber, the cylindrical architectural form incorporates a pronounced circular capital and matching moulded base framing the main vertical shaft. The surface displays distinct hand-carved fluting running down the length of the column, complemented by a distressed weathered finish that reveals patches of original white paint remnants layered over the exposed wood grain. Standing at a height of 133 cm with a diameter of 34 cm, the piece presents a substantial yet space-efficient profile suitable for positioning directly onto the floor. Placed thoughtfully in an empty corner of a study, library, or hallway, this freestanding architectural salvage item brings organic texture and historical character to a residential setting without dominating the room's proportions.

FAQs

Inspired by classical Greco-Roman architecture, 19th-century display columns were designed for country houses and galleries to elevate sculptures, busts, and botanical displays, introducing vertical structure and formal symmetry to interior spaces.

These pieces were typically carved or lathe-turned from softwoods such as pine or hardwoods such as oak. They often featured fluted vertical channels and rounded capitals, coated with paint, gesso, or wood stains.

Authentic period columns display evidence of historical woodworking techniques, including hand-carved or early mechanical fluting, natural wood shrinkage lines along the grain, and multi-layered paint loss or aged surface patination.

An architectural column serves as a focal point in a hallway, alcove, or corner, providing a sturdy surface to display contemporary ceramics, figurative sculptures, or trailing indoor foliage.

Maintain the surface by dusting with a soft, dry cloth and avoiding water or chemical cleaning agents that could detach loose paint layers. Keep the column in a dry interior environment with stable humidity to prevent timber movement.
