18th century
For Sale by ActFurniture LTD
Description

The oak displays a lovely figured grain and a warm, rich colour with a deep, mellow patina built up over many years.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE GEORGIAN ERA:
Slight oval shrinkage across the solid oak plank: centuries of natural wood drying.
Slotted iron screws holding the underside batten rails: handmade early fixings.
Hand-shaped cabriole legs dovetailed into the base: classic eighteenth-century joinery.

Originating in the eighteenth century, Georgian tilt-top tables feature a circular surface mounted on a central pedestal with tripod legs. Designed for flexibility during tea service and social gatherings, the hinge mechanism allowed the top to fold vertically for compact storage along room perimeters when idle.

These tables were constructed primarily from solid native hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, and walnut. Key structural features include a hand-turned central pillar, iron or dovetail-secured tripod cabriole legs, and a brass or iron catch mechanism that fastens the top to the underframe block.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-sawn tool marks on the underside, original iron catches, and subtle variations in the hand-turned pedestal. The oak timber typically displays deep natural patination, minor board shrinkage consistent with age, and pad or snake feet fastened with period joinery.

Place the table alongside an armchair as an occasional drink surface, or tilt the top vertically to display it against a wall in an entryway or alcove. The rich oak grain and classic tripod profile provide grounding visual structure within modern or traditional decor.

Preserve the timber finish by applying high-grade beeswax twice annually and dusting with a dry microfibre cloth. Keep the item away from direct radiators and prolonged sunlight to prevent wood shrinkage, and release the catch gently when operating the tilting mechanism.
