FAQs

A tilt-top table, also known as a snap-table, features a hinged circular or rectangular top that tilts vertically on a central column, allowing the table to be stored flush against a wall when not in use.

These tables were primarily crafted from native solid timbers such as oak, mahogany, or walnut, joined with pegged mortise and tenon joints, hand-dovetailed catch blocks, and hand-lathe turned pedestals.

Authentic period examples display hand-planed undersides, original iron or brass tilt latches, slight asymmetry from timber shrinkage over time, and authentic surface wear around the tripod feet.

Position the table beside an armchair or sofa as an occasional drink surface, or tilt the top vertically in a room corner or alcove to display the timber grain as a decorative backdrop.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft cloth and apply a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year, keeping the table away from direct heat sources and damp areas to prevent timber warping.
