This Georgian occasional table functions as an antique tilt-top wine table, dating from 1800 in the English Country House style. The piece combines a warm brown bleached oak top with a dark turned tripod base, featuring a circular top, a turned central column, tripod cabriole legs, and pad feet. Surface details visible include a darker mahogany repair insert at the edge of the circular top, minor chips, surface wear, an old repair on one of the legs, and an old iron strengthener underneath. The table stands 73 cm high and 70 cm wide. In a contemporary home, this occasional table suits placement in an empty corner as a functional accent piece for a living room or hallway. The compact round top provides a convenient surface for holding small decorative items or a drink, while the tilting mechanism allows the tabletop to fold flat against the base for space-saving storage when not in use. The contrasting light timber top and dark base create a rustic focal point that complements traditional and transitional interiors alike.

A Georgian tilt-top table is an 18th-century occasional table featuring a circular or shaped top that hinges vertically on a central turned pedestal with tripod legs. Designed for flexibility, these tables could be stored flat against a wall or in a corner when not in use for tea, cards, or wine.

Craftsmen during the Georgian period primarily constructed these tables using solid native woods such as oak, elm, fruitwood, and mahogany. The bases feature turned central columns and hand-shaped cabriole legs, often joined with timber pegs and brass or iron catch mechanisms.

Authentic period pieces typically feature hand-cut joinery, irregular underside wear, hand-wrought iron or brass tilt latches, and turned pedestals showing minor hand-turned asymmetries. The timber will show natural shrinkage across the grain over time, resulting in a slightly oval top rather than a perfect circle.

Place the table beside an armchair or sofa as an occasional drink stand, or display it with the top tilted vertically against a wall in a hallway or empty corner to highlight the wood grain and silhouette.

Keep the timber clean by dusting with a dry microfibre cloth and applying a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the table away from direct heat sources and radiators to prevent timber warp or splitting, and ensure the metal tilt-catch is kept clean and lightly lubricated.
