This nineteenth-century William IV occasional table is constructed from dark brown oak and mahogany with an inlaid geometric border, standing at 73 cm high. The round tilt-top surface features a chequered triangular pattern around the rim, a hand-written label remnant underneath, and light surface staining. Below the top sits an unusual open barley twist column supported by a pedestal base with three carved tripod legs. Placed in a fireplace alcove, the piece functions practically as a surface for holding small decorative items or a drink. The timber displays a rich grain and deep colour throughout, with foliate carving visible on the legs and slight damage to one foot underpad.

Originating in the 18th century, tilt-top tables were designed as versatile, space-saving furniture. When not in use for serving tea or display, the circular top folded vertically so the table could be stored against a wall or in a room corner.

These tables were commonly crafted from dense hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, or walnut. Decorative examples often incorporated marquetry or parquetry timber inlays around the border using contrasting woods.

Authentic period examples feature handmade metal tilt catches or wooden block mechanisms beneath the top. Look for hand-turned stems, hand-carved tripod legs, and natural wear patterns around the feet and catch mechanism.

Place the table beside an armchair as an occasional drink surface, or display it in a room corner with the top tilted upward to highlight geometric wood inlays as focal wall art.

Keep the wood surface clean by dusting with a soft, dry cloth and applying high-grade beeswax polish annually. Avoid positioning the table near direct heat sources or damp areas to prevent timber warping or veneer lifting.
