This late 19th-century Victorian Sheraton Revival kidney-shaped serving tray dates from 1890 and is made of satinwood, mahogany, and brass with a painted finish. The golden brown surface has a warm honey-coloured tone, showcasing hand-painted floral garlands and scrolling ribbon motifs in soft shades of green, yellow, and red enclosed within a fine dark border. The shaped tray features an elegant raised gallery rim with a gently scalloped outline and upright brass carrying handles mounted to either end. Natural signs of age and use consistent with the period are present across the timber surface. The tray measures 64 cm wide and 36 cm deep, offering a practical scale for household use. Today, this piece serves multiple functions in domestic interiors, operating as a functional serving tray for drinks or as a decorative display surface on a coffee table, ottoman, or sideboard top. Its English Country House style suits traditional and eclectic living spaces, where it adds a touch of period character and colour. The compact proportions allow it to fit easily onto standard furniture surfaces while providing a secure raised rim and sturdy metal handles for lifting and carrying. The hand-painted botanical detailing provides a focal point when displayed flat on a surface or used during entertaining.

FAQs

Kidney-shaped trays emerged during the late eighteenth century and gained wider popularity during the Victorian era. The concave inner edge was designed to rest comfortably against the body when carried by domestic staff or hosts serving tea and drinks.

These trays were typically constructed using native or imported hardwoods such as satinwood, mahogany, or pine veneer, often finished with painted polychrome enamel details and fitted with cast brass side handles.

Authentic period pieces display age-appropriate wear to the painted surface, natural crazing in the varnish layer, authentic oxidisation on brass hardware, and slight irregularities in hand-executed painted brushwork.

A vintage or antique wooden tray can be placed flat on an upholstered ottoman, sideboard, or coffee table to group smaller decorative objects, decanters, or glassware together.

Keep the wood away from direct heat sources and standing liquids to prevent warping or lacquer damage. Clean gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and avoid chemical polished solvents on hand-painted surfaces.
