Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

This 19th-century Anglo-Indian Burmese console table is designed in the Anglo-Indian Colonial style with a demi-lune silhouette. Formed from dark brown teak with a rich patina, the table features a fitted glass top and an elaborate pierced back decorated with scrolling foliage, peacocks, exotic birds, and ram's head masks. The structure rests on heavily carved lion mask cabriole legs terminating in scroll feet, alongside intricate pierced foliage lattice work across the frieze. Measuring 96.5 cm high, 146 cm wide, and 63 cm deep, the table provides a substantial surface area. Suitable for placement beside the front door in an entrance hall, this nineteenth-century console table functions as a practical display surface for decorative items in traditional and contemporary interiors. The dark wood grain, clear protective glass top, and deeply carved surface relief complete the piece, which remains in very good antique condition.

FAQs

Anglo-Indian and Burmese furniture originated during the 19th century when native artisans crafted European furniture forms using local hardwoods like teak and rosewood. The style is characterised by extensive hand carving, dense floral scrollwork, pierced fretwork, and mythological or animal motifs.

Pieces were typically constructed from solid dense hardwoods, such as padauk, teak, or rosewood, which allowed for deep undercut relief carving. Construction relies on traditional joinery methods, often topped with hand-carved gallery splashes and fitted glass tops to protect detailed surface work.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-tool marks within deep, undercut pierced carving and subtle irregularities from hand planes. Older examples feature oxidized dark patinas, pegged joint construction, and substantial weight due to dense native timber.

A heavily carved dark wood console table functions well as a focal point in a neutral hallway or foyer against plain, light-coloured walls. Balance the intricate carving by pairing the table with simple contemporary ceramics or understated wall lighting above.

Dust deeply carved relief work using a soft brush or vacuum attachment with a brush head. Apply high-quality beeswax sparingly once or twice a year to preserve moisture in the timber, avoiding water and placement near direct heat sources.
