This Anglo-Burmese colonial console table originates from 1880 and comes in a dark brown polished padauk wood. The piece displays a serpentine shaped front, a raised gallery back with pierced fretwork, and an X stretcher incorporating a carved human head at the center. Elaborate openwork carvings cover the upper apron, legs, and upstand, depicting floral scrolls, ivy, foliage, lions, and dragons. The four corner supports take the form of large, intricately carved cabriole legs. Measuring 99.5 cm high, 154 cm wide, and 52 cm deep, the table provides a substantial surface area for display. In a contemporary home, this console table serves as a statement piece beside the front door or in a hallway to hold daily essentials like keys and post. The sturdy construction and deep wood tones complement traditional or eclectic interior schemes, adding architectural interest and ornate detail to an entryway or living space.

FAQs

A Burmese carved padauk console table is a 19th or early 20th-century item of furniture created in Myanmar during the British colonial period. It is defined by intricate, deep openwork carving and the use of dense local padauk wood.

Anglo-Burmese furniture is predominantly constructed from native dense hardwoods such as padauk (Pterocarpus macrocarpus) and teak. These timbers allow for deep relief and pierced fretwork without structural splitting.

Authentic pieces feature dense, heavy hardwood construction with deep hand-carved pierced fretwork depicting regional flora, foliage, and mythological creatures. Look for traditional joinery, dark natural timber oxidation, and fine chisel marks rather than machine finishing.

Position the piece as a focal point against a plain wall in an entryway, living area, or hallway. Pair it with modern lighting or subtle decorative accents to contrast the high level of detail in the woodwork.

Dust regularly using a soft bristles brush to reach inside the pierced fretwork without snagging the wood. Keep the table away from direct heat sources to prevent timber movement, and apply a high-grade beeswax polish sparingly.
