This George III mahogany hexagonal wine cooler, dating from around 1780, rests on its original stand and is fashioned from well-figured and patinated Cuban mahogany in warm brown tones. The piece displays distinct grain patterns across its panelled sides, set with a small brass drop handle on the hinged top lid, a central keyhole escutcheon on the upper body, and structural horizontal mouldings dividing the sections. Four straight, sturdy wooden legs support the main body from beneath. Measuring 67 cm high, 48 cm wide, and 48 cm deep, this item functions as a practical drinks cabinet or distinctive side table in a living room, dining room, or empty corner.

Originating in the eighteenth century, wine coolers (or cellarettes) were designed to hold ice and chill wine bottles in formal dining rooms, serving both a functional and status-driven purpose.

Georgian cellarettes were typically crafted from solid mahogany or walnut, frequently fitted with lead linings to retain ice and equipped with cast brass handles for transport.

Authentic pieces from the George III period display hand-cut joinery, period-correct brass hardware, original patination, and proportional leg designs typical of late eighteenth-century craftsmanship.

A wine cooler can serve as an occasional side table, a planter box, or a standalone accent piece in a dining room, hallway, or living area.

Clean the timber using a soft microfiber cloth and apply high-quality beeswax regularly along the wood grain to protect the finish and preserve the natural patina.
