Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Fine crazing across the underside: natural ageing of old black lacquer.
Moulded scalloped rim: typical mid-Victorian tray shaping.
Gilded border decoration rubbed thin in places: honest wear from handling.
Surface drying lines through the painted oils: age shrinkage in the pigment.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This Victorian decorative tray dates from the nineteenth century and is made of papier-mâché finished in black lacquer, paint, and gold leaf. The piece takes an English country house style featuring a scalloped rim with a gilded foliate border, a central oval hand-painted equestrian scene depicting horse riders in a landscape, and visible surface wear to the painted surface. Measuring 65 cm wide by 51 cm deep, it provides a practical display surface for interior styling. Placement suits a sideboard top as a decorative accent within a traditional home interior. The accessory pairs well with period furnishings while offering a functional platform for display or serving purposes.

Victorian papier-mache lacquerware refers to decorative items crafted from molded, compressed paper pulp or laminated paper sheets that were baked, lacquered, and hand-decorated. Originating in the 18th century and peaking in popularity during the mid-19th century, these pieces were often finished with japanning techniques, gilding, and detailed hand-painted scenes.

Craftsmen constructed these trays by pasting multiple layers of paper over shaped wooden or metal molds, pressing them tightly, and baking them dry. Once hardened, the object was smoothed, coated with multiple layers of oil-based black asphaltum varnish, polished to a high sheen, and decorated with gilding or painted enamels.

Authentic 19th-century pieces generally exhibit significant visual weight despite being paper-based, owing to dense compression and heavy varnish. Looking closely reveals faint surface crazing, hand-applied gilt work with subtle wear, and evidence of hand painting rather than modern transfer prints.

Equestrian trays can be flat-styled on a sideboard or coffee table to group smaller decor items, such as candles or small vases. Alternatively, placing the tray on a dedicated display stand or mounting it as wall art highlights the central painted artwork as a decorative focal point.

Clean lacquered papier-mache using a dry, soft microfiber cloth to gently remove dust. Avoid using water, detergents, or chemical solvents, as moisture and harsh chemicals can cause the lacquer to cloud, crack, or lift from the underlying paper base.
