This nineteenth-century Regency cellarette takes a sarcophagus form crafted from dark brown mahogany with a stepped lid and bun feet. Brass lion mask ring handles accent the sides, and the interior retains its original liner. The wood displays a rich dark brown tone with visible grain, complemented by the polished metallic finish of the brass hardware and the neat joinery of the stepped lid. Dimensions measure 38 cm high, 47 cm wide, and 33 cm deep, making it a compact standalone container. Positioned in a living room, this piece works well within a fireplace alcove as a functional storage chest or a decorative side accessory. The small scale suits spaces where larger period furniture proves impractical, while the enclosed compartment provides concealed storage for small household items.

A cellarette is a wooden cabinet or chest, developed in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, specifically intended to hold and store bottles of wine or spirits near dining spaces.

These storage boxes were predominantly made from solid woods such as mahogany, walnut, or oak, and frequently featured brass lion mask drop handles, zinc or lead internal linings, and bun feet.

Authentic period examples feature hand-cut dovetail joinery, original period brass ring handles, natural wood patination, and internal compartments designed for bottle storage.

A cellarette can be placed in a dining alcove, entrance hallway, or drawing room corner to function as a decorative low chest or drinks storage accent.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and moisture, clean surfaces regularly with a soft cloth, and apply beeswax polish periodically to maintain the wood finish.
