Georgian Mahogany Wine Cooler / Cellarette

18th century
Description

A well-kept Georgian mahogany wine cooler of elegant, understated form, complete with its original interior and practical twin-section layout. The brass carry handles and turned drawer pulls add just enough formality without tipping into grandeur, and both compartments retain working locks. The piece stands on square tapered legs finished with brass cup castors, giving it the easy movement these were designed for. A tidy, honest example with a pleasing depth of colour and the kind of simple refinement that works anywhere.

Condition Report

Excellent antique condition throughout. The keys are later replacements, and the drawer lock appears to be a period but later addition. One drawer pull has a tiny loss to the lower backplate, and there is a minor loss to the boxwood stringing at the rear, neither of which detract. Structurally sound, clean, and ready to use.

The photographs form part of the condition report, so please review them carefully. Further images or a video viewing can be provided on request. Viewings are welcome at our Southampton unit, strictly by appointment.

If you have any questions regarding this piece, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the 18th century, the cellarette was designed as a portable wooden chest or cabinet to store wine and spirit bottles at ambient temperatures near the dining table.

They were primarily crafted from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, oak, or walnut, frequently incorporating brass handles, key escutcheons, and castors, with interior lead linings to retain cold water or ice.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joinery, period-correct brass hardware, original key mechanisms, square tapered or turned legs, and appropriate age-related oxidisation on the timber.

A cellarette functions well as an accent piece in a hallway, dining space, or drawing room, serving as a compact side table or secondary drinks storage cabinet.

Routine cleaning requires a soft microfiber cloth for dusting, accompanied by an occasional application of natural beeswax polish to maintain the timber patination and prevent drying out.
