Georgian Mahogany Wine Cellerette, C.1820

18th century
Description

An attractive George III / Regency period mahogany wine cellerette, dating to the early 19th century, of particularly elegant and compact proportions.

The hinged rectangular top opens to reveal a fitted interior divided into six individual bottle compartments, retaining a pleasingly untouched character and rich colour. Below is a useful lockable drawer, fitted with brass knob handles and retaining its key.

The cellerette is raised on four finely turned and tapering legs, while each side is fitted with a particularly decorative cast brass floral backplate and carrying ring, a handsome period detail that adds considerably to the piece.

The mahogany has developed a wonderfully warm, mellow colour with attractive figuring and the minor marks and wear associated with age and use. Both practical and decorative, this is a charming example of Georgian dining-room furniture and would work equally well today as a wine cooler, drinks stand or occasional table.

England, circa 1820.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Georgian wine cellarette is a standalone wooden chest or cabinet designed during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries to hold, transport, and cool wine bottles or spirits within dining rooms.

Ninteenth-century cellarettes were primarily constructed from solid dense hardwoods such as mahogany or walnut, complemented by cast brass hardware, keyhole escutcheons, and internal lead or zinc linings for insulation.

Authentic Georgian cellarettes demonstrate period construction methods including hand-cut dovetail joints, original brass handles with hand-chased details, hand-planed secondary timbers, and natural patination along the wood grain.

An antique cellarette can function as an accent storage piece, a side table in a living space, or a dedicated drinks container within a dining area or home bar setup.

Mahogany cellarettes require regular dusting with a soft microfiber cloth and occasional application of high-grade beeswax polish. Exposure to direct sunlight, central heating vents, and moisture should be avoided to prevent timber movement.
