Popularised during the 19th century, tilt-top centre tables were designed to stand in the middle of a drawing room or hall. The hinged mechanism allowed the circular top to tilt vertically when not in use, freeing up floor space for social gatherings.

These tables were constructed using solid timber bases, such as walnut or mahogany, featuring highly figured burr veneers arranged in segmented or radial patterns on the surface. A wooden or brass latch mechanism secured the hinged top to the central pedestal block.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut joinery, original metal or wooden tilt catches, and age-related patination beneath the pedestal base. Look for fine marquetry or radial veneering on the top, alongside genuine wear to the carved scroll feet.

Position the table in an entrance hall or foyer to serve as a focal point, styled with a grand ceramic vase or floral arrangement. Alternatively, place it in a spacious living area or alcove as a compact breakfast table.

Keep the table away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight to prevent warping or fading of the veneer. Dust regularly with a soft microfibre cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish periodically to nourish and protect the timber finish.
