Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1850s:
Turned fluted legs with parcel gilding: French revival taste popular from the mid-nineteenth century.
White ceramic castors in brass cup mounts: standard English hardware of the era.
Four-way stretcher centred by a carved rosette: typical mid-Victorian parlour table design.
Gilding rubbed thin on raised edges: natural wear from decades of careful use.
Burr walnut top with delicate floral roundels: skilled mid-nineteenth-century cabinet work.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This Victorian centre table dates from 1850 and is made from warm brown burr walnut with walnut timbers, boxwood inlay, and ceramic castors. The piece takes the form of an English Country House centre table with a serpentine shaped top decorated with marquetry inlay, supported by four turned fluted legs and an X-frame stretcher featuring a central carved floral motif. Each leg terminates in a white ceramic castor wheel. The woodwork displays rich figuring across the veneered top and fine gilt details on the reeded uprights. It measures 74 cm high, 129 cm wide, and 97.5 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this table functions as a central feature in a spacious foyer, hallway, or entrance hall. It provides a flat surface for a decorative floral arrangement, lamp, or welcoming display items while anchoring the proportions of a large reception area.

FAQs

Originating in the 19th century, centre tables were designed as decorative focal points positioned in the middle of drawing rooms, libraries, or foyers to hold books, lighting, or decorative objects.

These tables feature a solid wood core overlaid with thin veneers of highly figured burr walnut, often decorated with floral boxwood marquetry, turned columns, gilt highlights, and porcelain castors.

Authentic 19th-century examples display natural age patina, original brass or ceramic castors, hand-cut joinery beneath the tabletop, and genuine burr walnut grain variations across the veneer surface.

Position the table in an entrance hall or living room, styling the top with contemporary ceramics, a structured floral arrangement, or minimalist art books to contrast with the elaborate woodwork.

Keep the table away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent veneer movement, dust regularly with a clean microfibre cloth, and apply a natural beeswax polish annually.
