This Edwardian coopered oak barrel stick stand takes the form of a solid wooden vessel with bowed sides, finished in a dark brown polish that shows natural timber grain. It is bound with patinated brass hoops secured by rivets around the rim, centre, and foot, and the front displays a detailed royal coat of arms crest in gold, red, and blue tones. The cylindrical body stands upright on a flat base, measuring 61 cm high, 33 cm wide, and 25.5 cm deep. Positioned beside the front door or in a hallway, it functions as a practical holder for walking sticks, canes, and umbrellas. The durable oak construction and heavy brass hardware provide steady support for daily use, while the traditional heraldic decoration adds a decorative focal point to an entrance hall, mudroom, or gentleman's library interior.

In Victorian entryways and hallways, coopered barrels were repurposed or manufactured specifically as storage vessels for walking sticks, canes, and umbrellas. They provided a robust, utilitarian container designed to keep wet outerwear off floorboards.

These stands were constructed using solid timber staves, typically oak or pine, held together with riveted brass or iron hoops. The exterior often featured stencilled or hand-painted armorial transfers, royal crests, or coats of arms.

Authentic period examples exhibit original coopered joinery, genuine patina or tarnishing on the metal bands, and natural timber shrinkage over time. Painted crests on period pieces typically show light craquelure, surface wear, or rubbing consistent with age.

Position the barrel stand in an entryway, porch, or boot room to hold umbrellas and walking sticks. It can also function in a study or library as a decorative container for rolled maps, blueprints, or architectural drawings.

Dust the timber staves regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a clear beeswax polish to protect the finish. Avoid placing damp umbrellas directly into untreated timber interiors, and polish the brass hoops gently without using abrasive chemicals on painted surfaces.
